Sarajevo International Airport (IATA: SJJ) is the leading international airport in Bosnia and Herzegovina, serving Sarajevo, the country's capital city.

It's 6 km southwest of Sarajevo's train station and 12 km west of downtown in Butmir's Ilidža municipality. This airport has an 8,666-foot-long lighted runway.

History of Sarajevo International Airport

When the local airliner Aeroput inaugurated a regular route linking Belgrade to Podgorica via Sarajevo in 1930, the first regular flights to Sarajevo utilizing an airport in the suburb of Butmir began. This route connected Sarajevo to Belgrade and Podgorica. After another year, Aeroput inaugurated a new road connecting Zagreb and Belgrade, with stops in Sarajevo, Split, and Rijeka.

In 1935, Aeroput began non-stop service between Belgrade and Sarajevo three times per week; the following year, this service was expanded to Dubrovnik. 1937 was the first year that regular flights were offered by Aeroput connecting Sarajevo and Zagreb.

The following year, 1938, was when the first international flights were provided by Aeroput, which extended the route Dubrovnik – Sarajevo – Zagreb to include Vienna, Brno, and Prague.

The Butmir airfield continued to serve its purpose right up until the year 1969. When JAT, the Yugoslav national carrier, started purchasing jet aircraft in the middle of the 1960s, it became clear that Sarajevo required a new airport with an asphalt-concrete runway. In 1966, the airport's building began at its current location, which is quite a distance from the location of the former airport.

Sarajevo Airport opened its doors to domestic travel on June 2, 1969. 1970 marked the year when Frankfurt, Germany, became the very first foreign destination that was served. The airport served primarily as a "feeder" airport, meaning that passengers on their route to overseas locations boarded planes to Zagreb and Belgrade before continuing to their final destination.

The first restoration took place in preparation for the Winter Olympics in 1984. At that time, the runway was lengthened by 200 meters, the navigation system was upgraded, and a new terminal that could accommodate one million people per year was constructed.

At the beginning of the Bosnian War, the airport was under the control of the Yugoslav People's Army, also known as the JNA. When the regular flights were halted, the JNA was able to evacuate approximately 30,000 individuals, most of whom were women and children.

These people were the wives and children of JNA officers evacuating Sarajevo during the siege. During this time, the United States and France sent their initial humanitarian relief deliveries.

After the JNA pulled out, Bosnian Serb forces took control of the airport and kept it that way for some time. They handed up the airport to the United Nations in June of 1992 so that it could be used for humanitarian purposes (United Nations Security Council Resolution 757).

During the Bosnian War, the United Nations performed the most significant humanitarian operation in the organization's history. This operation included approximately 13,000 flights.

Since it was reopened to civilian aviation traffic on August 16, 1996, the airport has undergone many phases of renovation. It is currently in the process of being gradually restored.

Since the 1995 Dayton Agreement, the airport has been a commercial aircraft hub, with Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa, Air Serbia, Croatia Airlines, and Turkish Airlines utilizing its facilities.

It was the location of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in 1914, which was carried out by a local Young Bosnia activist named Gavrilo Princip. This crime was the impetus for the outbreak of World War I.

This ultimately resulted in the collapse of Austro-Hungarian authority in Bosnia, which paved the way for establishing the multiethnic Kingdom of Yugoslavia in the Balkan region.

Later, following World War II, the region came under the administration of the communist Socialist Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, located within the republic, also known as Second Yugoslavia.

Since Sarajevo was selected to serve as the capital of this more extended republic, the city's population and business community have experienced tremendous growth, along with investments in infrastructure and economic development.

A wealthy period for the city was characterized by the socialist republic's hosting of the 1984 Winter Olympics that same year.

After the Yugoslav Wars, the city was besieged for 1,425 consecutive days (from April 1992 to February 1996), making it the most prolonged siege of a capital city in contemporary military history.

This was during the Bosnian War and the dissolution of Yugoslavia, when nationalist and ethnic passions led to the destruction of Yugoslavia, the tearing apart of families, and the execution of genocide and massacres. Sarajevo is currently the city in Bosnia and Herzegovina that is seeing the most rapid population growth due to ongoing post-war rehabilitation.

In 2011, Sarajevo was put forth as a candidate for the European Capital of Culture 2014. The European Youth Olympic Festival will be held this year after it was chosen as the host location.

In addition, the UNESCO Creative City designation was bestowed upon Sarajevo in October 2019 to recognize the city's efforts to position culture as a primary focus of its growth initiatives.
